When adopting a hamster from a pet store or a private individual, the first concrete difficulty often arises as soon as you return home: you don’t know whether the animal is male or female. Determining the sex of a hamster relies on specific anatomical markers, but observing them requires appropriate handling and a minimum of method to avoid stressing the animal or making mistakes.
Ano-genital distance in hamsters: the most reliable marker
Most online guides focus on the presence or absence of testicles. Instead, we start with the criterion that works in all cases, including with young hamsters or when the testicles are not visible.
The ano-genital distance is the most reliable sexing criterion. In males, the space between the anus and the genital opening is significantly larger than in females. In females, the two openings are very close together, almost touching.
When trying to determine the sex of a hamster, this criterion should take precedence over all others. The male’s testicles can be retracted due to stress, cool temperatures, or simply because the animal is still young. Relying solely on their visible presence leads to frequent errors.
In practice, you gently turn the animal over (see the section on handling) and observe the area under the tail. Two visibly spaced openings indicate a male. Two almost touching openings indicate a female. This marker works for both Syrian hamsters and dwarf or Chinese hamsters.

Handling to sex a hamster without stressing it
Observing the ano-genital area requires partially turning the animal over. You cannot just look at it from above. The method of handling is a safety issue for both the hamster and the owner.
Preparing the animal before examination
Wait for the hamster to be awake and active. Waking it up to sex it causes stress, making observation more difficult (agitated animal, contracted muscles, retracted testicles).
Place your hands in a cupped position in the cage and let the hamster climb in by itself. Never grab a hamster by the tail or squeeze it to immobilize it. These actions provoke a defensive reaction (biting) and can injure the animal.
Observation position
Once the hamster is in your hands, support it with your entire body resting on your palm. Perform the examination close to the ground or above a soft surface (folded towel, cushion) to limit the consequences of a potential fall.
To observe underneath, you can use a simple technique: place the hamster on a slightly transparent surface (such as a clear plastic box) and look from below. This method reduces direct handling and works well with nervous hamsters.
Testicles, nipples, and other physical indicators of hamsters
Once the ano-genital distance is verified, other physical indicators help confirm the sexing.
- Visible testicles in adult males: in mature Syrian hamsters, the testicles form two distinct bulges at the base of the tail. In dwarf hamsters, they are less prominent but still noticeable when the animal is relaxed.
- Visible nipples in females: by gently parting the belly fur, you can spot rows of small nipples. Males do not have any (or they are very few and non-functional).
- In male Syrian hamsters, the scent gland located on the flank may be more pronounced. This criterion remains secondary and is not sufficient on its own to conclude.
Reports vary on the minimum age for reliable sexing. In very young hamsters, the ano-genital distance is harder to assess. Most sources recommend waiting a few weeks after birth for the anatomical markers to be sufficiently clear.
Sexing errors in hamsters: consequences and affected species
Getting the sex wrong not only poses the problem of an unexpected litter. A male and a female housed together can reproduce very quickly, but the risk of fights also exists among misidentified same-sex hamsters.
The BC SPCA recommends never keeping a male and a female together, even temporarily. Individual housing remains the safest choice for most species of hamsters.

Differences by hamster species
The species must be identified before drawing conclusions about cohabitation. The Chinese hamster is a solitary animal. Some dwarf species (Roborovski, Campbell) may sometimes tolerate housing in pairs, but this tolerance is conditional and never replaces rigorous sexing.
Confusing a male and a female among dwarf hamsters housed together often leads to a litter within a few weeks. Female hamsters have short reproductive cycles, and a pregnancy can go unnoticed if the sexes were not correctly identified from the start.
Summary of the hamster sexing method
- Wake the animal, let it climb into cupped hands, never grab it suddenly.
- Observe the distance between the anus and the genital opening: clear spacing (male) or almost touching openings (female).
- Check for the presence of testicles in adult males, remembering that they can be retracted.
- Look for nipples on the female’s belly by gently parting the fur.
- Cross-check multiple criteria rather than relying on a single indicator.
Correct sexing upon acquiring the hamster avoids unpleasant surprises of cohabitation and unwanted litters. In case of persistent doubt, a veterinarian specialized in exotic pets can confirm the sex in a matter of seconds during a routine consultation.
